Netflix Is Looking To Crackdown On Password Sharing

Depending on which Netflix plan you subscribe to, you could have up to multiple simultaneous streams going on at once. The idea is that this is meant to be used within a household where you might be watching one show on Netflix and your other family members could be watching something else. However, people have been abusing the feature by sharing passwords with friends to help reduce the cost of the subscription, but that’s something that Netflix is looking to crackdown on. This is according to a report from The Streamable who discovered that Netflix is now displaying a message that reads, “If you don’t live with the owner of this account, you need your own account to keep watching.” In order for the user to proceed, they will need to enter a code that will either be sent to their email or via SMS. Netflix’s terms of service already do state that accounts aren’t meant to be shared outside of a household, but it looks like the company is getting more serious about clamping down on these practices. Netflix wouldn’t be the first to try and fix this problem. A couple of years ago, Spotify was also going after users who shared the service’s Family Plan with friends who lived in a different area. Right now, Netflix seems to be testing out this method to try and reduce password sharing, so it is unclear if they plan to stick with it or if it could change in the future.
